Essent Group Insiders Sell US$1.8m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 11, 2023 08:40

In the last year, many Essent Group Ltd. (NYSE:ESNT) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Essent Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Senior VP, Mary Gibbons, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$747k worth of shares at a price of US$49.80 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$48.42. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Does Essent Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Essent Group insiders own 3.2% of the company, currently worth about US$165m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
