Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a recent conversation with renowned podcast host Lex Fridman that AI startup OpenAI's “closed-source” behavior is not a desirable approach. To this end, Musk's first artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, will adopt an open source policy.
Recently, Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI released its first artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok. According to reports, it only took xAI four months to develop this AI robot. Musk said it plans to double the number of xAI computers every month. Currently, Grok is training on 8,000 Nvidia A100 graphics processors.
In contrast, OpenAI uses GPT Builder to launch Grok through a simple prompt. Earlier this week, OpenAI released a new GPT Builder that allows users to create their own GPT using simple commands. For Musk's Grok, this is an irony.
In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman and others. Musk said in an interview that he played a key role in OpenAI's recruitment process. Also, in the beginning, he provided almost all of the funding, about $40 million.
However, in 2018, Musk and Altman had a disagreement, and Musk then left the OpenAI board of directors. He later stated that OpenAI had broken away from his original idea and started to turn the code off source for profit.
According to Musk, OpenAI was created as an open source, non-profit company to compete with Google. Today, however, it has become a closed-source, profit-maximizing company.
