Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Precipio, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRPO) Even After 27% Share Price Boost

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 7, 2023 05:00

Precipio, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRPO) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 48% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Precipio's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Healthcare industry in the United States, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Precipio Performed Recently?

Recent times have been advantageous for Precipio as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Precipio's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 15% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 174% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 105% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 7.2%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Precipio is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Precipio's P/S is back within range of the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Precipio's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
