Optimism for Forestar Group (NYSE:FOR) Has Grown This Past Week, Despite One-year Decline in Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 3, 2023 08:10

It hasn't been the best quarter for Forestar Group Inc. (NYSE:FOR) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 19% in that time. On the other hand, over the last twelve months the stock has delivered rather impressive returns. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 123% in that time. So we think most shareholders won't be too upset about the recent fall. The real question is whether the business is trending in the right direction.

Since it's been a strong week for Forestar Group shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the last twelve months, Forestar Group actually shrank its EPS by 16%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

Forestar Group's revenue actually dropped 18% over last year. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. We're pleased to report that Forestar Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 123% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 10%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately.
