China Express AirlinesLTD (SZSE:002928) Adds CN¥522m to Market Cap in the Past 7 Days, Though Investors From Three Years Ago Are Still Down 39%

Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term China Express Airlines Co.,LTD (SZSE:002928) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 39% in three years, versus a market decline of about 12%. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 36% lower in that time. Furthermore, it's down 20% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 11% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

Because China Express AirlinesLTD made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last three years China Express AirlinesLTD saw its revenue shrink by 20% per year. That means its revenue trend is very weak compared to other loss making companies. With revenue in decline, the share price decline of 12% per year is hardly undeserved. The key question now is whether the company has the capacity to fund itself to profitability, without more cash. The company will need to return to revenue growth as quickly as possible, if it wants to see some enthusiasm from investors.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 4.6% in the twelve months, China Express AirlinesLTD shareholders did even worse, losing 36%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with China Express AirlinesLTD , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
