Paycom Software's (NYSE:PAYC) Five-year Total Shareholder Returns Outpace the Underlying Earnings Growth

Paycom Software(紐約證券交易所代碼:PAYC)的五年期股東總回報超過了基礎收益增長

It hasn't been the best quarter for Paycom Software, Inc. (NYSE:PAYC) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 25% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. It's fair to say most would be happy with 117% the gain in that time. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Paycom Software achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 17% per year. This EPS growth is remarkably close to the 17% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 17% in the last year, Paycom Software shareholders lost 16% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 17%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. Before spending more time on Paycom Software it might be wise to click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling shares.
