Simply Wall St ·  Oct 12, 2023 07:00

In the last year, multiple insiders have substantially increased their holdings of PRA Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRAA) stock, indicating that insiders' optimism about the company's prospects has increased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

PRA Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by President Vikram Atal for US$752k worth of shares, at about US$19.04 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$19.64. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. The good news for PRA Group share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.

While PRA Group insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insiders At PRA Group Have Bought Stock Recently

Does PRA Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 2.8% of PRA Group shares, worth about US$22m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Do The PRA Group Insider Transactions Indicate?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest PRA Group insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for PRA Group you should be aware of.
