Even After Rising 7.3% This Past Week, Henan Huaying Agricultural Development (SZSE:002321) Shareholders Are Still Down 67% Over the Past Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 2, 2023 18:52

Henan Huaying Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002321) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 18% in the last quarter. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. Indeed, the share price is down 67% in the period. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.

While the last five years has been tough for Henan Huaying Agricultural Development shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Henan Huaying Agricultural Development isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last five years Henan Huaying Agricultural Development saw its revenue shrink by 11% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. Arguably, the market has responded appropriately to this business performance by sending the share price down 11% (annualized) in the same time period. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and don't grow revenues. You might be better off spending your money on a leisure activity. You'd want to research this company pretty thoroughly before buying, it looks a bit too risky for us.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Henan Huaying Agricultural Development shareholders can take comfort that their trailing twelve month loss of 1.8% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 5.4%. What is more upsetting is the 11% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. This sort of share price action isn't particularly encouraging, but at least the losses are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
