Does InvenTrust Properties Corp.'s (NYSE:IVT) Weak Fundamentals Mean That The Market Could Correct Its Share Price?

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 22, 2023 07:35

InvenTrust Properties (NYSE:IVT) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 5.8% over the last month. We, however wanted to have a closer look at its key financial indicators as the markets usually pay for long-term fundamentals, and in this case, they don't look very promising. Particularly, we will be paying attention to InvenTrust Properties' ROE today.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for InvenTrust Properties is:

2.6% = US$42m ÷ US$1.6b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each $1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made $0.03 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

InvenTrust Properties' Earnings Growth And 2.6% ROE

It is hard to argue that InvenTrust Properties' ROE is much good in and of itself. Not just that, even compared to the industry average of 6.8%, the company's ROE is entirely unremarkable. For this reason, InvenTrust Properties' five year net income decline of 36% is not surprising given its lower ROE. We reckon that there could also be other factors at play here. For instance, the company has a very high payout ratio, or is faced with competitive pressures.

So, as a next step, we compared InvenTrust Properties' performance against the industry and were disappointed to discover that while the company has been shrinking its earnings, the industry has been growing its earnings at a rate of 12% in the same period.

Is InvenTrust Properties Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
