By selling US$13m worth of Nutanix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTNX) stock at an average sell price of US$32.47 over the last year, insiders seemed to have made the most of their holdings. The company's market cap plunged by US$518m after price dropped by 11% last week but insiders were able to limit their loss to an extent.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Nutanix Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Rajiv Ramaswami, for US$5.8m worth of shares, at about US$30.39 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$20.56). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does Nutanix Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Nutanix insiders own 2.9% of the company, currently worth about US$136m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Nutanix Insiders?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Nutanix insiders selling. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Nutanix you should be aware of, and 1 of these doesn't sit too well with us.
