Insiders Who Placed Huge Bets on EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:SATS) Earlier This Year Would Be Disappointed With the 4.9% Drop

Insiders who acquired US$507k worth of EchoStar Corporation's (NASDAQ:SATS) stock at an average price of US$24.23 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 4.9% price decline. Insiders buy with the expectation to see their investments rise in value over a period of time. However, recent losses have rendered their above investment worth US$341k which is not ideal.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

EchoStar Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Director R. Dodge made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$495k worth of shares at a price of US$24.17 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$16.30 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. EchoStar insiders own about US$479m worth of shares (which is 35% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
