Possible Bearish Signals as Belden Inc. (NYSE:BDC) Insiders Disposed of US$1.4m Worth of Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 20, 2022 11:30

Over the past year, many Belden Inc. (NYSE:BDC) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Check out our latest analysis for Belden

Belden Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Roel Vestjens, for US$888k worth of shares, at about US$66.66 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$65.24. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Belden shares, than buying. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Belden Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last three months saw significant insider selling at Belden. In total, insiders dumped US$1.2m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Does Belden Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 1.4% of Belden shares, worth about US$38m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Belden Insiders?

Insiders haven't bought Belden stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Belden. For example - Belden has 4 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
