Insiders Who Sold Samsara Inc.'s (NYSE:IOT) Earlier This Year Didn't Have to Weather This Week's 3.2% Slide

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 19, 2022 09:31

Samsara Inc.'s (NYSE:IOT) stock price has dropped 3.2% in the previous week, but insiders who sold US$4.2m in stock over the past year have had less luck. Insiders would probably have been better off holding on to their shares given that the average selling price of US$12.58 is still lower than the current share price.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Samsara Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Principal Financial Officer, Dominic Phillips, sold US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$13.81 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$12.63. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

In the last year Samsara insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Does Samsara Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Samsara insiders own 50% of the company, currently worth about US$3.3b based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Samsara Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Samsara insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Samsara insiders selling. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
