Optowide Technologies (SHSE:688195) Shareholders Notch a 43% Return Over 1 Year, yet Earnings Have Been Shrinking

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 15, 2022 19:20

Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the Optowide Technologies Co., Ltd. (SHSE:688195) share price is 42% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 10% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

Since the stock has added CN¥494m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over the last twelve months, Optowide Technologies actually shrank its EPS by 16%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 0.4% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. However the year on year revenue growth of 20% would help. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

A Different Perspective

Optowide Technologies shareholders should be happy with the total gain of 43% over the last twelve months, including dividends. A substantial portion of that gain has come in the last three months, with the stock up 81% in that time. This suggests the company is continuing to win over new investors. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Optowide Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors.
