Shiseido wins “No. 1 overall ranking” for the 3rd year in a row in “BEST100, a company where women play an active role”

Shiseido has been selected for 3 consecutive years as “No. 1 in the overall ranking” in the 2024 “Companies Where Women Play an Active Role BEST100” hosted by “Nikkei WOMAN” and the Nikkei Womanomics Project of the Nikkei Group.

About the “100 Best Companies Where Women Play an Active Role”

The “BEST100 Companies Where Women Play an Active Role” is a comprehensive ranking calculated based on the results of “Nikkei Woman” and the “Nikkei Womanomics Project” of the Nikkei Group, and this year marks the 22nd time. The survey evaluated the actual state of utilization of female employees in companies from the two perspectives of “job satisfaction” and “ease of work,” and the four indicators of “degree of promotion of female participation,” “degree of promotion of female participation,” “degree of work-life balance,” and “degree of diversity in human resources” were measured and ranked. Shiseido was evaluated for measures to promote women's participation, such as the appointment of female managers, and initiatives such as diversity equity & inclusion (DE&I), etc., and in addition to the current overall ranking, it was selected as 1st in the “managerial recruitment” category and 2nd in the “human resource diversity” category in addition to the current overall ranking.

Background of the evaluation and Shiseido's efforts

In order to realize its corporate mission “BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD (The Power of Beauty),” Shiseido positions DE & I as an important pillar of management strategy in order to create an organizational culture where employees recognize and respect individual differences regardless of gender, age, nationality, etc., and continue to create innovation through these synergy. Above all, we are actively promoting the active participation of women. Starting with the “NEXT LEADERSHIP SESSION for WOMEN (NEXT LEADERSHIP SESSION for WOMEN)” for female employees aiming to advance their careers as managers, which began in 2017, a mentoring program with executive officers and female employees began in 2020 as a touchpoint career support initiative with role models, and a career mentoring program has been carried out since 2022 I'll do it. We are promoting diverse and flexible ways of working to support the active participation of women. In 2021, the flextime system without core time was revised, and the “Shiseido Hybrid Work Style,” which maximizes the synergy between office work and remote work, was introduced. As a result, the ratio of female managers in the Shiseido Group in Japan was 40.0% as of 2024/1/1.
Furthermore, through our subsidiary KODOMOLOGY Co., Ltd., we started a child-rearing support service “KANGAROOM+ (Kangaroom Plus)” *1 for infants to elementary school students in April 2023 to support employees raising children. This initiative also led to the achievement of 100% childcare leave*2 for male employees.
Also, starting in 2023, we will launch an in-house research organization “Shiseido DE & I Lab” *3 to study the relationship between the activities of human resources with diverse backgrounds and corporate growth, and we are working on empirical research. The “Shiseido DE & I Lab Site” was opened in 2024/3. By disclosing research results and our efforts so far, we will further contribute to promoting the growth of the Japanese economy through the realization of DE&I.
Going forward, as a leading company for bridging the gender gap in Japanese society as a whole, we will continue to focus on contributing to support activities for the active participation of women, and promote the activities of employees with diverse backgrounds, such as nationalities and career hires, not limited to gender, and further accelerate diversity management.
