EchoStar (NASDAQ:SATS) Shareholders Are up 10% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Five Years

EchoStar(納斯達克股票代碼:SATS)股東上週上漲了10%,但在過去五年中仍處於虧損狀態

EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:SATS) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 24% in the last month. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. In that time the share price has delivered a rude shock to holders, who find themselves down 59% after a long stretch. So we're not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.

On a more encouraging note the company has added US$396m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

Because EchoStar made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last half decade, EchoStar saw its revenue increase by 36% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. Unfortunately for shareholders the share price has dropped 10% per year - disappointing considering the growth. It's safe to say investor expectations are more grounded now. Given the revenue growth we'd consider the stock to be quite an interesting prospect if the company has a clear path to profitability.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think EchoStar will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

EchoStar shareholders are down 6.6% for the year, but the market itself is up 24%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 10% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for EchoStar that you should be aware of.
