Insiders At Applied Industrial Technologies Sold US$24m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  May 13 06:20

Many Applied Industrial Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:AIT) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Applied Industrial Technologies

The President, Neil Schrimsher, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$16m worth of shares at a price of US$170 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$197, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 32% of Neil Schrimsher's holding.

Does Applied Industrial Technologies Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Applied Industrial Technologies insiders own 1.4% of the company, currently worth about US$107m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
