Keysight Technologies (NYSE:KEYS) Shareholders Have Earned a 13% CAGR Over the Last Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  May 6 08:04

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. For example, the Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:KEYS) share price is 81% higher than it was five years ago, which is more than the market average. Over the last year the stock price is up, albeit only a modest 4.2%.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, Keysight Technologies managed to grow its earnings per share at 41% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 13% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective

Keysight Technologies shareholders are up 4.2% for the year. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 13% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. If you would like to research Keysight Technologies in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
