Viewing insider transactions for Gen Digital Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GEN ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net buyers. This means that a larger number of shares were purchased by insiders in relation to shares sold.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Gen Digital Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President & Director Ondrej Vlcek made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.7m worth of shares at a price of US$15.79 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$19.95), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Insiders At Gen Digital Have Sold Stock Recently

Over the last three months, we've seen a bit of insider selling at Gen Digital. EVP, CFO & Principal Accounting Officer Natalie Derse only netted US$26k selling shares, in that period. It's not great to see insider selling, nor the lack of recent buyers. But the selling simply isn't sufficiently substantial to be of much use as a signal.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Gen Digital insiders own about US$1.1b worth of shares (which is 8.9% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Gen Digital Tell Us?

While there has not been any insider buying in the last three months, there has been selling. However, the sales are not big enough to concern us at all. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. Judging from their transactions, and high insider ownership, Gen Digital insiders feel good about the company's future.
