Even Though Limbach Holdings (NASDAQ:LMB) Has Lost US$82m Market Cap in Last 7 Days, Shareholders Are Still up 438% Over 5 Years

The Limbach Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:LMB) share price has had a bad week, falling 16%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. To be precise, the stock price is 438% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last half decade, Limbach Holdings became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. Indeed, the Limbach Holdings share price has gained 259% in three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 36% per year. Notably, the EPS growth has been slower than the annualised share price gain of 53% over three years. So one can reasonably conclude the market is more enthusiastic about the stock than it was three years ago.

We're pleased to report that Limbach Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 151% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 40% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Limbach Holdings is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
