Passive investing in an index fund is a good way to ensure your own returns roughly match the overall market. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. That downside risk was realized by Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 35%. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 20%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 21% in that time.

去年,由於股價下跌了35%,See Air Corporation(紐約證券交易所代碼:SEE)的股東意識到了這種下行風險。

Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unfortunately Sealed Air reported an EPS drop of 44% for the last year. The share price fall of 35% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So despite the weak per-share profits, some investors are probably relieved the situation wasn't more difficult.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Sealed Air's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

While the broader market gained around 20% in the last year, Sealed Air shareholders lost 33% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Sealed Air (including 1 which shouldn't be ignored) .
