The Past One-year Earnings Decline for Clearway Energy (NYSE:CWEN.A) Likely Explains Shareholders Long-term Losses

Clearway Energy(紐約證券交易所代碼:CWEN.A)過去一年的收益下降可能解釋了股東的長期虧損

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. That downside risk was realized by Clearway Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CWEN.A) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 34%. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 16%. Longer term shareholders haven't suffered as badly, since the stock is down a comparatively less painful 22% in three years. In contrast, the stock price has popped 9.9% in the last thirty days.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last year, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Unfortunately Clearway Energy reported an EPS drop of 90% for the last year. The share price fall of 34% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared. With a P/E ratio of 46.61, it's fair to say the market sees an EPS rebound on the cards.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Clearway Energy's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Clearway Energy, it has a TSR of -30% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 16% in the last year, Clearway Energy shareholders lost 30% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 7% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Clearway Energy (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
