Institutional Investors May Adopt Severe Steps After Udemy, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:UDMY) Latest 3.4% Drop Adds to a Year Losses

To get a sense of who is truly in control of Udemy, Inc. (NASDAQ:UDMY), it is important to understand the ownership structure of the business. And the group that holds the biggest piece of the pie are institutions with 35% ownership. In other words, the group stands to gain the most (or lose the most) from their investment into the company.

And so it follows that institutional investors was the group most impacted after the company's market cap fell to US$1.5b last week after a 3.4% drop in the share price. This set of investors may especially be concerned about the current loss, which adds to a one-year loss of 28% for shareholders. Institutions or "liquidity providers" control large sums of money and therefore, these types of investors usually have a lot of influence over stock price movements. As a result, if the decline continues, institutional investors may be pressured to sell Udemy which might hurt individual investors.

In the chart below, we zoom in on the different ownership groups of Udemy.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Udemy?

Institutional investors commonly compare their own returns to the returns of a commonly followed index. So they generally do consider buying larger companies that are included in the relevant benchmark index.

As you can see, institutional investors have a fair amount of stake in Udemy. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. It is not uncommon to see a big share price drop if two large institutional investors try to sell out of a stock at the same time. So it is worth checking the past earnings trajectory of Udemy, (below). Of course, keep in mind that there are other factors to consider, too.

Insider Ownership Of Udemy

Udemy

While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. Management ultimately answers to the board. However, it is not uncommon for managers to be executive board members, especially if they are a founder or the CEO.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

Private Equity Ownership

With a stake of 30%, private equity firms could influence the Udemy board. Some investors might be encouraged by this, since private equity are sometimes able to encourage strategies that help the market see the value in the company. Alternatively, those holders might be exiting the investment after taking it public.

Public Company Ownership

It appears to us that public companies own 12% of Udemy. It's hard to say for sure but this suggests they have entwined business interests. This might be a strategic stake, so it's worth watching this space for changes in ownership.
