Wilmar International (SGX:F34) Shareholders Have Earned a 7.7% CAGR Over the Last Five Years
Wilmar International (SGX:F34) Shareholders Have Earned a 7.7% CAGR Over the Last Five Years
When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. To wit, the Wilmar International share price has climbed 22% in five years, easily topping the market decline of 16% (ignoring dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 0.8% , including dividends .
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over half a decade, Wilmar International managed to grow its earnings per share at 11% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 4% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 7.59 also suggests market apprehension.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
SGX:F34 Earnings Per Share Growth September 22nd 2022We know that Wilmar International has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? You could check out this free report showing analyst revenue forecasts.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Wilmar International, it has a TSR of 45% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Wilmar International shareholders are up 0.8% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 8% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Wilmar International (1 can't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
