Investors Five-year Losses Grow to 74% as the Stock Sheds CN¥660m This Past Week
Some stocks are best avoided. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Spare a thought for those who held Harbin Bank Co., Ltd. (HKG:6138) for five whole years - as the share price tanked 77%. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 38% over the last twelve months. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 18% in the last three months. However, one could argue that the price has been influenced by the general market, which is down 8.7% in the same timeframe.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.
View our latest analysis for Harbin Bank
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Harbin Bank has made a profit in the past. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.
It could be that the revenue decline of 17% per year is viewed as evidence that Harbin Bank is shrinking. That could explain the weak share price.
You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
SEHK:6138 Earnings and Revenue Growth September 2nd 2022It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Harbin Bank's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Harbin Bank's TSR of was a loss of 74% for the 5 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 21% in the twelve months, Harbin Bank shareholders did even worse, losing 38%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 12% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for Harbin Bank you should be aware of.
