Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased CN¥966k worth of Meitu, Inc. (HKG:1357) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 10% over the past week. However, the purchase is proving to be a costly gamble, since losses made by insiders have totalled CN¥6.1k since the time of purchase.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Meitu

The CEO & Executive Director Zeyuan Wu made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for HK$966k worth of shares at a price of HK$0.97 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being HK$0.96). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Zeyuan Wu.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Meitu insiders own 45% of the company, worth about HK$1.9b. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Do The Meitu Insider Transactions Indicate?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Once you factor in the high insider ownership, it certainly seems like insiders are positive about Meitu. Looks promising! So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. For example - Meitu has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies.
