Traditional automakers seek to expand their technical expertise to deal with TeslaChallenge

Porsche will establish a joint venture with a German lithium-ion battery manufacturer to develop and produce electric sports car batteries, the new company name may be custom battery co., Ltd. (Custom Battery Co., Ltd.).

Porsche said in a statement on Sunday that a German brand would invest millions of euros and control an 83.75% stake in the company; small-scale production is scheduled to begin in 2024.

The battery is the combustion chamber of the future and the new subsidiary will play an important role in "the development, manufacture and sale of high-performance batteries", Porsche said.

Traditional carmakers are increasing their expertise in battery technology to meet the challenges of a series of new energy vehicle companies such as Tesla. As for Porsche, in addition to attracting customers in terms of mileage, performance and charging time, the batteries used in sports cars also need to withstand high temperatures, charge quickly and recover energy effectively.

Oliver Bloom (Oliver Blume), CEO of Porsche, said in an interview: the new battery will allow it to be recharged in less than 15 minutes, while the Taycan brand model still takes 22.5 minutes to charge the battery from 5% to 80%.

It is reported that Porsche will use silicon as the cathode material to achieve higher energy density and more compact batteries. ItsThe plant on the outskirts of Stuttgart has an annual capacity of at least 100MW and can produce about 1000 sports cars a year.

In addition, Porsche R & D director Michael Steiner said he would continue to test the application of its battery technology in motorsports, and his experience on the track would help improve the technology.

As Volkswagen's most profitable brand, Porsche has launched more car types. Porsche's Burning Age 911, for example, is sold worldwide, while an all-electric version of the Macan SUV will be available in 2023.
