Yonhap News Agency, May 30, due to the sharp drop in salt production and Japan's decision to discharge Fukushima nuclear sewage into the sea, the price of Tianri salt in South Korea has doubled compared with last year, and kimchi production enterprises are facing the dilemma of "cooking without salt."
The price of a 20-kilogram bag of Tianri salt in 2019 is about 2000 won, but it more than doubled to 17000 won last year, the Hanxinan county government said Wednesday. A kimchi production company said that in response to the peak autumn kimchi season has begun to stock, but due to the rapid rise in prices and its associated effects, salt prices are still rising.
Xin'an County salt industry authorities said that due to a sharp drop in production last year and frequent rain during harvest this year, production was halved. According to statistics, since April, the output of Xin'an Day Salt is less than 50,000 tons, which is only half of that of the same period last year.
