It's shaping up to be a tough period for First Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:THFF), which a week ago released some disappointing quarterly results that could have a notable impact on how the market views the stock. Results look to have been somewhat negative - revenue fell 4.8% short of analyst estimates at US$48m, and statutory earnings of US$0.93 per share missed forecasts by 5.1%. The analysts typically update their forecasts at each earnings report, and we can judge from their estimates whether their view of the company has changed or if there are any new concerns to be aware of. We've gathered the most recent statutory forecasts to see whether the analysts have changed their earnings models, following these results.

After the latest results, the three analysts covering First Financial are now predicting revenues of US$220.5m in 2024. If met, this would reflect a decent 12% improvement in revenue compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are forecast to drop 19% to US$3.82 in the same period. In the lead-up to this report, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$229.8m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$4.44 in 2024. The analysts seem less optimistic after the recent results, reducing their revenue forecasts and making a real cut to earnings per share numbers.

The analysts made no major changes to their price target of US$42.50, suggesting the downgrades are not expected to have a long-term impact on First Financial's valuation. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. There are some variant perceptions on First Financial, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$43.00 and the most bearish at US$42.00 per share. With such a narrow range of valuations, the analysts apparently share similar views on what they think the business is worth.

These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the First Financial's past performance and to peers in the same industry. It's clear from the latest estimates that First Financial's rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with the forecast 16% annualised revenue growth to the end of 2024 noticeably faster than its historical growth of 6.6% p.a. over the past five years. Compare this with other companies in the same industry, which are forecast to grow their revenue 6.0% annually. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, the analysts also expect First Financial to grow faster than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

底線

The most important thing to take away is that the analysts downgraded their earnings per share estimates, showing that there has been a clear decline in sentiment following these results. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, but the latest forecasts still imply the business will grow faster than the wider industry. The consensus price target held steady at US$42.50, with the latest estimates not enough to have an impact on their price targets.
