What is a pattern day trader (PDT)

A day trade is defined as opening a position and then closing the position in the same security in a margin account on the same day. According to the rules of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a pattern day trader (PDT) is someone who executes four or more day trades within any five consecutive business days. All brokerage firms registered in the United States and regulated by FINRA and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) are subject to the day trading rules.

        Notes:

        ● If you open a position and then the position is closed out on the same day due to forced liquidation, it would be counted towards your total day trades.

        ● If you execute four or more day trades within any five consecutive business days, and the number of day trades represents more than 6% of your total trades within your margin account for that same five trading day period. You will be flagged as a PDT, regardless of whether your account equity is greater than $25,000 or not. You can click here for details.

        ● For the purpose of risk management, if you place an order to open a position and then another order to close the position in the same security on the same day, it will be counted towards your total day trades, regardless of whether the second order is executed or not. However, if the second order is canceled without being executed, it would not be counted towards your total day trades. You can click here for details.

        ● Your accounts with Moomoo Financial Inc. are jointly subject to the day trading rules. For example, if you have a US margin account and an HK margin account with Moomoo Financial Inc., you may execute up to three day trades within any five consecutive business days with the two accounts; otherwise, you will be flagged as a PDT.
