Recent 3.4% Pullback Isn't Enough to Hurt Long-term International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT) Shareholders, They're Still up 76% Over 5 Years

最近の3.4%の下落は、長期的にインターナショナルゲームテクノロジー(NYSE:IGT)の株主に害を与えるには十分ではありません。5年間でまだ76%上昇しています。

International Game Technology PLC (NYSE:IGT) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 17% in the last quarter. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. Unfortunately its return of 50% is below the market return of 90%.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 3.4%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last half decade, International Game Technology became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

It is of course excellent to see how International Game Technology has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, International Game Technology's TSR for the last 5 years was 76%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 28% in the last year, International Game Technology shareholders lost 18% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 12%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for International Game Technology (1 is concerning) that you should be aware of.
