It is usually uneventful when a single insider buys stock. However, When quite a few insiders buy shares, as it happened in SilverBow Resources, Inc.'s (NYSE:SBOW) case, it's fantastic news for shareholders.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

SilverBow Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Chairman of the Board Marcus Rowland made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$370k worth of shares at a price of US$37.00 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$29.79 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. We note that Marcus Rowland was both the biggest buyer and the biggest seller.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 17.50k shares for US$607k. But insiders sold 11.00k shares worth US$290k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by SilverBow Resources insiders. Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. SilverBow Resources insiders own about US$21m worth of shares. That equates to 2.9% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
