While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the World Fuel Services Corporation (NYSE:INT) share price has gained 23% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 34% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
The recent uptick of 5.3% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a lot at historical fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, World Fuel Services' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 12% each year. So do you think it's a coincidence that the share price has dropped 13% per year, a very similar rate to the EPS? We don't. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. In this case, it seems that the EPS is guiding the share price.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for World Fuel Services the TSR over the last 3 years was -31%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
World Fuel Services shareholders are down 17% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the market return of -16%. So last year was actually even worse than the last five years, which cost shareholders 3% per year. Weak performance over the long term usually destroys market confidence in a stock, but bargain hunters may want to take a closer look for signs of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with World Fuel Services , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
