Multiple insiders secured a larger position in Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) shares over the last 12 months. This is reassuring as this suggests that insiders have increased optimism about the company's prospects.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Dollar General

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Chairman of the Board Michael Calbert for US$1.3m worth of shares, at about US$156 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$137. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$1.9m for 12.97k shares. But insiders sold 8.92k shares worth US$1.4m. In total, Dollar General insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Dollar General insiders own about US$83m worth of shares. That equates to 0.3% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
