0.3% Earnings Growth Over 5 Years Has Not Materialized Into Gains for Tellgen (SZSE:300642) Shareholders Over That Period

Ideally, your overall portfolio should beat the market average. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. So we wouldn't blame long term Tellgen Corporation (SZSE:300642) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 44% over a half decade. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 11%.

Since Tellgen has shed CN¥431m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, Tellgen actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 1.4% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the the market had expectations of much higher growth, five years ago. Looking to other metrics might better explain the share price change.

The modest 1.2% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 19% a year in the five year period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Tellgen's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 14%. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 7% over the last five years. We're pretty skeptical of turnaround stories, but it's good to see the recent share price recovery. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Tellgen , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
