MSCI Insiders Sell US$2.7m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

MSCI Insiders Sell US$2.7m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Over the past year, many MSCI Inc. (NYSE:MSCI) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At MSCI

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Human Resources Officer, Scott Crum, sold US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$556 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$545. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Insider Ownership Of MSCI

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. MSCI insiders own 3.2% of the company, currently worth about US$1.4b based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The MSCI Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded MSCI shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of MSCI insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. At Simply Wall St, we found 1 warning sign for MSCI that deserve your attention before buying any shares.
