Does DexCom (NASDAQ:DXCM) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

Does DexCom (NASDAQ:DXCM) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

DexCom(纳斯达克股票代码:DXCM)的资产负债表是否良好?

Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that DexCom, Inc. (NASDAQ:DXCM) does have debt on its balance sheet. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

A Look At DexCom's Liabilities

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that DexCom had liabilities of US$1.59b due within 12 months and liabilities of US$2.64b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$2.90b and US$984.8m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling US$353.6m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This state of affairs indicates that DexCom's balance sheet looks quite solid, as its total liabilities are just about equal to its liquid assets. So it's very unlikely that the US$51.6b company is short on cash, but still worth keeping an eye on the balance sheet. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, DexCom boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!

On top of that, DexCom grew its EBIT by 64% over the last twelve months, and that growth will make it easier to handle its debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine DexCom's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. While DexCom has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. Over the last three years, DexCom recorded free cash flow worth a fulsome 84% of its EBIT, which is stronger than we'd usually expect. That positions it well to pay down debt if desirable to do so.

Summing Up

总结

We could understand if investors are concerned about DexCom's liabilities, but we can be reassured by the fact it has has net cash of US$461.0m. And it impressed us with free cash flow of US$584m, being 84% of its EBIT. So is DexCom's debt a risk? It doesn't seem so to us. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for DexCom you should be aware of.
