It hasn't been the best quarter for The Trade Desk, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTD) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 15% in that time. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). To be precise, the stock price is 360% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price.

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last half decade, Trade Desk became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Trade Desk's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
