Qin L, a new hybrid model in BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) Dynasty lineup, is expected to go on sale at the end of this month with a next-generation hybrid system, according to local media.

The Qin L DM-i is expected to be launched on May 29, powered by BYD's fifth-generation DM-i hybrid technology, said a report in automotive media Yiche today.

The mid-size sedan is expected to be priced at around RMB 120,000 ($16,610) to RMB 150,000, the report said.

The Qin L measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,790 mm, according to a regulatory filing in February.

As a comparison, the BYD Qin Plus DM-i has a length, width and height of 4,765 mm, 1,837 mm and 1,495 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,718 mm

This means that the Qin L has longer and wider dimensions than the Qin Plus DM-i.

The Qin L is powered by an engine with a displacement of 1.5 L and a maximum power of 70 kW. Its electric motor has a maximum power of 120 kW.

The model weighs 1,660 kilograms and supports a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour.

The car has two range variants with battery capacities of 10.08 kWh and 15.874 kWh, and battery ranges of 60 km and 90 km, respectively, according to the previous filing.

BYD made its first preview for the Qin L on April 15, saying the sedan will set a new trend for mid-size sedans.

BYD showcased the Qin L at the 2024 Beijing auto show, which began late last month and ended last week.

The Qin L is born out of BYD's next-generation plug-in hybrid vehicle platform, which is more efficient, safer and more valuable, BYD said at the Beijing auto show.

On March 11, local media outlet 36kr reported that BYD will spend three years fighting a "liberation battle" to accelerate its market share from traditional gasoline vehicles.

As part of the plan, BYD will update its DM hybrid system, as well as its all-electric e-Platform, according to the report.

The company launched its DM hybrid technology platform in 2008 and rolled out its fourth-generation DM platform in 2021, dividing the technology into the more performance-oriented DM-p and the more energy-consumption-oriented DM-i.

BYD will launch its fifth-generation DM hybrid technology in May, with fuel consumption dropping to 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers on a low charge and the vehicle having a range of up to 2,000 kilometers on a full tank of fuel and a full charge, its chairman and president, Wang Chuanfu, said at an investor conference in late March.

BYD sold 313,245 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in April, up 48.96 percent year-on-year and up 3.57 percent from March, according to data it released on May 1.
