The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Gentex (NASDAQ:GNTX). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Gentex's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

Gentex

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, Gentex has grown EPS by 7.2% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't anything to write home about, it does show the business is growing.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The music to the ears of Gentex shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 19% to 22% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Gentex Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Gentex

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$7.9b company like Gentex. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. To be specific, they have US$19m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 0.2% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Gentex with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b is about US$8.5m.

Gentex offered total compensation worth US$7.1m to its CEO in the year to December 2023. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is Gentex Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Gentex

One important encouraging feature of Gentex is that it is growing profits. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Gentex, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Gentex is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.

Although Gentex certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
