Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. To wit, the DRDGOLD Limited (NYSE:DRD) share price has soared 443% over five years. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 34% gain in the last three months.

换句话说,DRDGOLD Limited(纽约证券交易所代码:DRD)的股价在五年内飙升了443%。

The past week has proven to be lucrative for DRDGOLD investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years of share price growth, DRDGOLD moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. In fact, the DRDGOLD stock price is 26% lower in the last three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 1.9% each year. So there seems to be a mismatch between the positive EPS growth and the change in the share price, which is down -9% per year.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. This free interactive report on DRDGOLD's earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for DRDGOLD the TSR over the last 5 years was 560%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

DRDGOLD shareholders are down 18% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 28%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 46%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for DRDGOLD (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
