Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide PepsiCo with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is PepsiCo Growing?

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. PepsiCo managed to grow EPS by 7.1% per year, over three years. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. PepsiCo maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 4.4% to US$92b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are PepsiCo Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$247b company like PepsiCo. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$332m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.1% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value.
