Adecoagro S.A. (NYSE:AGRO) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. Typically, the ex-dividend date is one business day before the record date which is the date on which a company determines the shareholders eligible to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. This means that investors who purchase Adecoagro's shares on or after the 13th of May will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 29th of May.

The company's upcoming dividend is US$0.1682 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of US$0.33 per share to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Adecoagro has a trailing yield of 2.9% on the current stock price of US$11.30. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. That's why we should always check whether the dividend payments appear sustainable, and if the company is growing.

Dividends are typically paid from company earnings. If a company pays more in dividends than it earned in profit, then the dividend could be unsustainable. Adecoagro paid out just 24% of its profit last year, which we think is conservatively low and leaves plenty of margin for unexpected circumstances. Yet cash flow is typically more important than profit for assessing dividend sustainability, so we should always check if the company generated enough cash to afford its dividend. What's good is that dividends were well covered by free cash flow, with the company paying out 18% of its cash flow last year.

It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Businesses with strong growth prospects usually make the best dividend payers, because it's easier to grow dividends when earnings per share are improving. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. That's why it's comforting to see Adecoagro's earnings have been skyrocketing, up 54% per annum for the past five years. Adecoagro looks like a real growth company, with earnings per share growing at a cracking pace and the company reinvesting most of its profits in the business.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. Since the start of our data, two years ago, Adecoagro has lifted its dividend by approximately 1.6% a year on average. Earnings per share have been growing much quicker than dividends, potentially because Adecoagro is keeping back more of its profits to grow the business.

To Sum It Up

Should investors buy Adecoagro for the upcoming dividend? We love that Adecoagro is growing earnings per share while simultaneously paying out a low percentage of both its earnings and cash flow. These characteristics suggest the company is reinvesting in growing its business, while the conservative payout ratio also implies a reduced risk of the dividend being cut in the future. There's a lot to like about Adecoagro, and we would prioritise taking a closer look at it.
