Insiders At Paychex Sold US$3.4m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

The fact that multiple Paychex, Inc. (NASDAQ:PAYX) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Paychex

Paychex

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Senior Vice President of Product Development & Information Technology, Michael Gioja, for US$2.9m worth of shares, at about US$125 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$120. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Paychex insiders own 11% of the company, worth about US$4.6b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Paychex Insiders?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Paychex shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Paychex insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. Of course, the future is what matters most. So if you are interested in Paychex, you should check out this free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
