Viewing insider transactions for HubSpot, Inc.'s (NYSE:HUBS ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net sellers. This means that a larger number of shares were sold by insiders in relation to shares purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At HubSpot

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Co-Founder, Dharmesh Shah, for US$7.1m worth of shares, at about US$470 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$621. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 1.0% of Dharmesh Shah's holding. Dharmesh Shah was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Does HubSpot Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. HubSpot insiders own about US$1.2b worth of shares (which is 3.9% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
