American Financial Group's (NYSE:AFG) Investors Will Be Pleased With Their Splendid 105% Return Over the Last Five Years

The main point of investing for the long term is to make money. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. But American Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE:AFG) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 24% over five years, which is below the market return. But if you include dividends then the return is market-beating. Zooming in, the stock is actually down 7.7% in the last year.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, American Financial Group managed to grow its earnings per share at 11% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 4% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of American Financial Group, it has a TSR of 105% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, American Financial Group shareholders lost 2.3% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 15% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand American Financial Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for American Financial Group you should be aware of.
