Some Powell Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:POWL) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that insider Thomas Powell recently sold a substantial US$1.5m worth of stock at a price of US$151 per share. However, it's crucial to note that they remain very much invested in the stock and that sale only reduced their holding by 0.4%.

Powell Industries Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by insider Thomas Powell was not their only sale of Powell Industries shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$96.59 per share in a -US$4.9m sale. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$154). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 2.2% of Thomas Powell's stake.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Powell Industries insiders own 23% of the company, worth about US$417m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
