Shutterstock Insiders Sold US$1.7m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Shutterstock Insiders Sold US$1.7m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

In the last year, many Shutterstock, Inc. (NYSE:SSTK) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Shutterstock

Shutterstock

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chief Financial Officer, Jarrod Yahes, for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$79.01 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$45.00. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership Of Shutterstock

Shutterstock

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Shutterstock insiders own 32% of the company, currently worth about US$512m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Shutterstock Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Shutterstock shares in the last quarter. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Shutterstock insiders selling. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Shutterstock you should know about.
