Why It Might Not Make Sense To Buy Independent Bank Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:IBTX) For Its Upcoming Dividend

Simply Wall St ·  01/26 05:25

Independent Bank Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:IBTX) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next four days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. It is important to be aware of the ex-dividend date because any trade on the stock needs to have been settled on or before the record date. Accordingly, Independent Bank Group investors that purchase the stock on or after the 31st of January will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 15th of February.

The company's upcoming dividend is US$0.38 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of US$1.52 per share to shareholders. Calculating the last year's worth of payments shows that Independent Bank Group has a trailing yield of 3.0% on the current share price of US$50.52. Dividends are an important source of income to many shareholders, but the health of the business is crucial to maintaining those dividends. So we need to check whether the dividend payments are covered, and if earnings are growing.

Dividends are usually paid out of company profits, so if a company pays out more than it earned then its dividend is usually at greater risk of being cut. Independent Bank Group distributed an unsustainably high 145% of its profit as dividends to shareholders last year. Without more sustainable payment behaviour, the dividend looks precarious.

Generally, the higher a company's payout ratio, the more the dividend is at risk of being reduced.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

When earnings decline, dividend companies become much harder to analyse and own safely. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. Independent Bank Group's earnings per share have fallen at approximately 25% a year over the previous five years. Such a sharp decline casts doubt on the future sustainability of the dividend.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. Since the start of our data, 10 years ago, Independent Bank Group has lifted its dividend by approximately 20% a year on average. That's intriguing, but the combination of growing dividends despite declining earnings can typically only be achieved by paying out a larger percentage of profits. Independent Bank Group is already paying out 145% of its profits, and with shrinking earnings we think it's unlikely that this dividend will grow quickly in the future.

To Sum It Up

Should investors buy Independent Bank Group for the upcoming dividend? Not only are earnings per share shrinking, but Independent Bank Group is paying out a disconcertingly high percentage of its profit as dividends. Generally we think dividend investors should avoid businesses in this situation, as high payout ratios and declining earnings can lead to the dividend being cut. Independent Bank Group doesn't appear to have a lot going for it, and we're not inclined to take a risk on owning it for the dividend.
