For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term BlackLine, Inc. (NASDAQ:BL) shareholders, since the share price is down 46% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 22%. Furthermore, it's down 11% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. But this could be related to the weak market, which is down 10% in the same period.

With the stock having lost 8.0% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

We don't think that BlackLine's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last three years, BlackLine saw its revenue grow by 19% per year, compound. That's a pretty good rate of top-line growth. Shareholders have endured a share price decline of 13% per year. This implies the market had higher expectations of BlackLine. However, that's in the past now, and it's the future is more important - and the future looks brighter (based on revenue, anyway).

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 8.7% in the last year, BlackLine shareholders lost 12%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 1.3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for BlackLine (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
